Students and families participating in the South Inter-Conference Association are justifiably upset about conference's decision to split ["Athletics Division Divisive," April 11]. But filing a lawsuit is not going to help anyone.

It's highly unlikely the decision to split was racially motivated. If there was any ulterior motive, it is more likely that crime in predominantly black neighborhoods discourages families from outside the neighborhood from coming in for games.

While racism plays a part in a lot of things, we cannot continue deluding ourselves into thinking it explains everything. When kids are being killed by stray bullets, and those bullets are coming from African Americans, we have bigger problems.

Sincerely,

Lee Walker
