Dear Editor:

If Rebecca Walsh is concerned about the fiscal impact of Utah's newly enacted school voucher program ("Vouchers: It's About the Money," Feb. 20), she should crusade for the removal of "mitigation funds" from the law. That section will pay public schools for five years for any of their students who accept vouchers and transfer to private schools.

Thus, taxpayers are going to subsidize public schools for students who are not even in their classrooms. That is akin to the government paying farmers not to grow crops.
