Chicago: E.D. Hirsch Jr. may be correct that national education standards will not automatically translate to a national curriculum ("School reform's next frontier: Translate new standards," Op-Ed, Sept. 27). However, he omits an important ingredient - a national exam. When this test begins driving what teachers teach, the U.S. effectively will have a national curriculum. However, every educationist and political hack will want a crack at being national headmaster. It is hard to see how that would advance Hirsch's vision of a more literate America.
