Taking on the Teachers’ Unions

Taking on the Teachers’ Unions
October 1, 1997

Last year, an arbitrator found that the California Teachers Association had overcharged agency fee payers over $7 million and ordered proportional rebates to more than 700 teachers who had objected to the union’s calculation of compelled agency fees as a condition of their employment. The arbitrator also found that the union had improperly charged teachers for funds to oppose a school voucher initiative and for a meeting that was essentially a political training seminar for union leaders.

The teachers were represented by Individual Rights Foundation General Counsel Patrick Manshardt and attorney Christoper Carlton of Faustman, Carlton, DiSante & Freudenberger. This year, Manshardt and Carlton are representing some 1,200 teachers who objected to the union spending their dues money on political and ideological activities.
