While just a few million dollars invested for small school voucher experiments has spurred some movement in the nation’s $300 billion public school system, the Annenberg Foundation’s investment of a half billion dollars to improve urban public schools has not had similar success.

According to a front-page story last year in the Washington Post, after four years, there are “diminished expectations” from the gift, as a result of the money becoming “so tangled in the politics of big city school systems, or divvied among so many groups for so many purposes, that overall the benefits may be marginal.”

“That’s quite a bust for your half billion,” commented The Washington Times’s Jennifer Grossman.
