Connecticut Governor Aims at Seniority, Tenure

Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy (D) has set six priorities for education legislation in 2012, including replacing teacher seniority and tenure with “a fair system that values skill and effectiveness.”

“We should not and will not accept half-measures and repackaged versions of the status quo,” Malloy said.

Malloy told state legislators he also wants better access to early childhood education, more state interventions in failing schools and districts, fewer state regulations on high-performing schools and districts, more school options such as magnets and charters, and more state money for needy districts.

The governor called for a set of January workshops for state education stakeholders to craft a plan to send the state legislature, which convenes Feb. 8.
