Climate Change Weekly #85

Proxy temperature records and climate modeling show current Greenland temperatures are colder than was the case in the early twentieth century and during the Medieval Warm Period, scientists report in the peer-reviewed journal Climate of the Past. The records also show variations in solar output are linked with Greenland temperature changes. The findings contradict assertions by global warming alarmists that Greenland temperatures reflect unprecedented global warming.

Japanese and American scientists analyzed proxy data for surface temperatures on the Greenland ice sheet. The data provided a temperature record extending back 800 years. The data showed temperatures during the 1200s and 1300s were similar to current temperatures, and that temperatures in the 1400s were higher than today.

Temperatures during the 1930s were also significantly higher than today, the data showed. The 1930s data add weight to U.S. temperature data also showing the 1930s were warmer than current temperatures.

SCIENTISTS FIND MORE FLAWS IN ‘4,000 YEAR’ WARMING CLAIMS

Scientists continue to find flaws in widely publicized claims by a recent Ph.D. student that current temperatures are the warmest of the past 4,000 years. Among the most damning facts, the alarmist claims draw heavily upon the student’s recent Ph.D. thesis, yet the Ph.D. thesis itself did not find any recent uptick in temperatures. Also, the asserted recent temperature rise appears to be spliced onto the asserted proxy temperature records, just as disgraced climate alarmist Michael Mann attempted in his discredited “hockey stick.”

CLIMATEGATE 3.0 REVEALS MORE ALARMIST MISCONDUCT

A new batch of Climategate emails reveals more misconduct by prominent global warming alarmists. For example, U.K. alarmist Phil Jones sent an email to Michael Mann telling him to delete emails as Mann finds appropriate, while simultaneously warning Mann not to tell anyone about freedom of information laws that would require alarmists to disclose their data. Also, alarmists discussed ways to pressure peer-reviewed science journals to reject papers authored by skeptics such as climate scientist Patrick Michaels.

GREENLAND ICE MELT CRISIS CANCELED

Claims that unusually warm temperatures this year were causing Greenland ice sheets to melt during the middle of winter are false, scientists report. The National Snow and Ice Data Center discovered a flawed algorithm that falsely indicated ice melt this winter. Alarmists say the flawed nature of their prior claims does not affect their claims that global warming is causing an ice-melt crisis in Greenland.

MONSOON RAINFALL CRISIS CANCELED

Natural factors are the primary driver behind a recent increase in monsoon rains in Southeast Asia, West Africa, and North America, scientists report in the peer-reviewed Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Natural swings in the climate have significantly intensified Northern Hemisphere monsoon rainfall, showing that these swings must be taken into account for climate predictions in the coming decades,” the scientists report.

PACE OF ANTARCTIC PENINSULA WARMING IS NOT UNPRECEDENTED

Global warming alarmists frequently point to the West Antarctic Peninsula as an indicator that the pace of recent global warming is unprecedented. Even forgetting the fact that temperatures in most of Antarctica are cooling, however, the warming trend in the West Antarctic Peninsula is “not outside the bounds of natural variability,” scientists report in the peer-reviewed journal Nature.

REVIEWERS NEEDED FOR CLIMATE CHANGE RECONSIDERED 2 The Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) is seeking credentialed individuals who are willing to serve as reviewers of the forthcoming NIPCC report Climate Change Reconsidered 2. Reviewers will be needed between April and August 2013 for various chapters and sub-chapters of the report. A list of topics addressed in the report, and for which reviews will be needed, can be found under the links and sub-links listed on the NIPCC Web site’s Topical Archive page. To volunteer as a reviewer, or for more information, please send an email to NIPCC_contact@nipccreport.org. Thank you, your help in this matter is greatly appreciated.
